Meteor Shower Night 2025 – St. Lawrence’s Tears from Villa Elizabeta

One of the most special summer nights is approaching again – St. Lawrence’s Tears, also known as the Perseids, will be at their peak on the night of August 12th to 13th, 2025, especially in the late evening and early morning hours, when the sky is darkest.

This meteor shower occurs as the Earth passes through dust and tiny particles left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, a celestial body that orbits the Sun every 133 years. These particles enter our atmosphere at speeds of up to 90 km/s, heat up due to friction, and burn up, leaving behind glowing trails in the sky – meteors. These starry “fireworks” reach temperatures of up to 5,500 °C!

In ideal conditions, you can see up to 100 meteors per hour, making the Perseids one of the most spectacular astronomical events of the year.

But remember an important tip: it takes at least 30 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to the dark, so avoid screens and artificial lights. At Villa Elizabeta, surrounded by nature and far from city lights, conditions are perfect for watching the stars. Just lie back on a deck chair and let the sky perform its show.

The popular term "St. Lawrence's Tears" only became common in the last 50 years or so, especially in Dalmatia, having been adopted from Italy. The name was inspired by the 19th-century Italian poet Giovanni Pascoli, who wrote in his poem 10 Agosto about the anniversary of his father’s death, comparing the falling meteors to tears.

For those seeking a deeper, scientific experience, we recommend a visit to the renowned Višnjan Observatory, where expert guides will take you on a journey through the stars.

Whether you're here for romance, wonder or peace, Villa Elizabeta is the perfect place to witness this heavenly event. Because like shooting stars, some moments are brief – but unforgettable
